Solar doesn’t generate electricity at 8 pm. Indian cities still want power at 8 pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For years the grid closed that gap by burning coal harder. In 2026 it started closing it with batteries. Thousands of containerised battery systems going up across Rajasthan, Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, each one packed with piping, tubing and cable that has to be held in place for fifteen years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At Jolly Clamps we’ve been watching this sector move from tender documents to purchase orders, and it’s happening faster than most component suppliers have registered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In this article we break down what a Battery Energy Storage System actually is, what’s inside the container, the five conditions that break clamping in these units, and what a BESS integrator needs from a clamp supplier before your part number reaches their bill of materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A Battery Energy Storage System is the grid’s rechargeable battery, working at megawatt-hours instead of milliamp-hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Renewable generation is not steady. Solar peaks at midday and disappears by evening. Wind arrives when it arrives. Demand doesn’t cooperate with either. So when generation runs ahead of demand, a BESS charges. When demand outruns generation, it discharges. Same principle as the power bank in your bag, with considerably more plumbing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Here’s something that surprises people outside the power sector: two years ago India had essentially no grid-scale battery storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
India added 7.9 GWh of battery storage in the first half of 2026 alone, taking cumulative operational capacity to 8.5 GWh, an eleven-fold increase in twelve months. Eighteen projects are running, and the India Energy Storage Alliance expects installed capacity to reach 12\u201315 GWh by year end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The forward projections are on another scale entirely. IESA puts total storage demand at 888 GWh by 2035-36, of which 321 GWh is batteries. The Central Electricity Authority’s figure for 2031-32 is 411.4 GWh, with 236.2 GWh from BESS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Government money is behind those numbers. The Viability Gap Funding scheme covers up to 40% of project capital cost, and a further outlay of roughly \u20b95,400 crore for around 30 GWh was cleared in May 2026. Procurement runs through SECI, NTPC, PGCIL and the state utilities, and the two-hour system has settled in as the standard grid-scale unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then there’s the clause that matters most to us and to anyone else manufacturing in India: projects must hit a minimum of 20% domestic content to qualify for VGF.<\/strong> Cells still come in from abroad. Brackets, clamps, cable cleats and hose clamps do not have to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Open a modern liquid-cooled enclosure and it stops looking like a battery. It looks like a small process plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Every one of those systems needs pipe held, tube routed and cable restrained, inside a box the size of a shipping container.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then the box goes on a truck, crosses three states, and gets set down on a plinth in Rajasthan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Transport before commissioning.<\/strong> These units are assembled in a factory and delivered complete. A container spends days on Indian highways taking vibration in every axis before it stores a single electron. Supports that sit tight in a workshop work loose on the road. Serrated bands, T-bolt clamps and locking fasteners earn their cost here. Plain slip-fit brackets are the first thing to rattle free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Continuous thermal cycling.<\/strong> Coolant lines heat and cool with every charge and discharge, and a merchant-mode BESS may cycle twice a day for fifteen years. That’s thousands of expansion and contraction events on the same length of tube. This is exactly the duty where fixed-torque fasteners lose grip and a constant-torque design holds. It’s the same reason European fleets specify constant tension on systems that heat up and cool down every run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pump and compressor vibration.<\/strong> Coolant pumps and chiller compressors run whenever the system runs, and their vibration travels straight into connected piping. Uncushioned clamps pass it to the joints. A weeping joint on a cooling circuit inside a live electrical enclosure is close to the worst outcome available on these sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Site environment.<\/strong> Indian BESS locations are not gentle. Rajasthan and Gujarat bring dust and 25\u00b0C daily temperature swings. Coastal Gujarat and Tamil Nadu bring salt air. External hardware, cable trays and conduit supports sit out in UV, monsoon and chlorides. SS304 is adequate inside a sealed, climate-controlled box. It is not adequate on the outside of one ten kilometres from the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Magnetic effects around high-current cables.<\/strong> This is the one that gets missed. Clamp a single-core high-current AC cable in a ferrous saddle and the alternating field induces eddy currents in the clamp, and the clamp heats up. Austenitic stainless such as SS316, aluminium, or a polymer-bodied cleat sidesteps it entirely. Mild steel saddles on single-core runs build a hot spot nobody put in the design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We hear the same thing here that we hear from marine buyers: a clamp is a clamp. Inside a BESS enclosure that’s exactly the wrong way to think about it. The application drives the specification, and the specification drives the grade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Here’s how we map our range across the systems in these units:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Liquid cooling loops and manifolds<\/strong> run on lined worm drive clamps and heavy-duty constant tension designs. The lined construction protects the tube surface, and constant tension handles the pressure and temperature cycling that a fixed-torque clamp can’t. SS304 is workable inside the enclosure; we recommend SS316 wherever coolant lines pass through an unconditioned compartment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pump and chiller connections<\/strong> call for our heavy-duty T-bolt hose clamps. Higher clamping load, better retention under continuous vibration, and no loss of tension across the temperature range these circuits see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fire suppression and mist distribution piping<\/strong> takes standard-series stainless clamps, SS304 minimum, with full material documentation, because this is safety-critical piping and it gets audited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n DC and AC power cabling<\/strong> needs non-magnetic support. Our SS316 P-clamps and cable cleats are the correct answer on single-core high-current runs, for the eddy-current reason above. Carbon steel P-clamps are fine on multi-core bundles and wrong on single-core.<\/p>\n\n\n\n BMS, control and communication cabling<\/strong> runs on P-clamps and stainless steel cable ties. This is the item most routinely left off a BESS bill of materials, then substituted with nylon on site. Nylon in a container that hits 55\u00b0C internal air temperature is a service call waiting to be logged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n External conduit, tray and inter-container cabling<\/strong> are SS316 throughout, including the anchoring hardware. One SS band with an MS bolt fails at the bolt. We don’t supply mixed-metal assemblies for outdoor duty and we advise customers against building them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n BESS procurement in India is running on VGF timelines, which makes it documentation-driven in a way that suits how we already work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The list we’re prepared for: EN 10204 3.1 mill certificates covering full material traceability. ASTM B117 salt-spray results for SS316 hardware going to coastal sites. PMI verification on stainless stock. RoHS and REACH compliance. DIN 3017 conformance on worm drive formats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Our processes are aligned to IATF 16949, with ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and RoHS certification behind them. That means traceability from raw coil to finished clamp, which is precisely what an integrator needs when they have to evidence domestic content against a VGF filing, not just claim it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We’ve manufactured this way for over 55 years, across automotive, oil and gas, filtration, construction and renewable energy. The documentation isn’t something we assembled for this sector. It’s how we’ve always shipped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Container designs get frozen. That’s the single most important commercial fact about this market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n BESS integrators standardise an enclosure layout and then repeat the same bill of materials across dozens or hundreds of units. Get qualified into that design once and every unit built to it carries your part number. Miss the design freeze and you spend the next three years quoting against whoever didn’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At the same time, integrators who built their early units on imported hardware are now under real pressure to localise, because VGF eligibility depends on it. They are actively looking for Indian-manufactured clamping hardware with export-grade documentation.
